Unit 3 Assignment 2

Initial ideas:

1.) Social Media addiction
2.) Violence games linked to violence/aggression
3.) Online safety

Research Techniques:

Introduction:

I have decided to research the topic of controversial/banned games and whether or not they are linked too violence, also if they should be banned or not. I have decided to do this topic because I like to play games and I have played a controversial violent game and I haven't become more violent and aggressive. However I heard that the news and scientist/researchers say that they can cause violence or/and aggression, so I would like to do more research into this to see if it is just a lie to get kids/young adults to not play those games or it is true or who it may effect.

Secondary research:

List of some controversial games:
  • Splatterhouse
  • Shadow Warrior
  • Carmageddon
  • Grand Theft Auto series
  • Thrill Kill
  • Kaboom!
  • Manhunt and Manhunt 2
  • Bully
  • RapeLay
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth
This is the grand theft auto series

This is the game RapeLay

Research I found:

I have found an article that says that violent video games are not affecting peoples behavior which is according to British researchers.
This is a snippet of some of the article and this is quantitative research
This article continues to say that if you play video games for less than an hour you are likely to be less aggressive, also the teachers of these tested kids gave them feedback of better behaviour. Furthermore, only 22 of the 217 kids were likely to have behaviour problems, have trouble academically and exhibit hyperactivity. The last sentence of this snippet says "This suggests that, in small doses, video games are a valuable and valid for of play which we do not need to fear". This research all concludes to video games are not affecting peoples behaviour or personality as long as not playing them too regularly or for many hours a day which only then a few people may be a little affected.

I have also found a video that tells about how violent video games are linked to bad behaviour, this is quantitative and qualitative because shows facts and a lot of detail and also figures.

Also found an article about a teenager that murdered his family and says he loves video games and the NBC says they may be connected.
This is the article about the teenage murderer.
This article says that this teenager that killed his whole family was excited about telling them how much he loved video games especially Grand Theft Auto and modern warfare which made the NBC make a link to his crime and video games. The main sentence that is in this article is "Nehemiah Griego did not elaborate on a motive for the shocking crime, but he had plenty to say about his love for video games" suggests that video games encouraged him to be violent if he gets frustrated, like he said he was "frustrated" with his mother and some time after he murdered his mother, father and 3 other siblings. At the end it says in red writing "There's no scientific evidence that shows and link between video games and violence", this shows that they don't want to make any rash decisions yet in case there is no link between violence and video games even-though this murder case seems to be that there is a link since he has no other motive. Also this is quantitative research.

Primary research:

I did my own quantitative research about if violent video games make people aggressive or angry, i asked 10 people my questionnaire that i made and got good results of what they said.

Click here to see my questionnaires results.

This is a bar chart of who i questioned
This is a bar chart of how many hours they spend playing video games per week
I tested 5 males and 5 females to make it even, all 100% say they have played or they own a violent video game, and only 2 people say they may have got more aggressive or angry and they were both male. This could show that men are more prone to becoming more aggressive or angry over the violent video games. 40% of the people say that they may know someone that has or is effected by aggression or anger due to violent video games. Only 1 person said that video games don't cause aggression or anger, the majority said it would depend on the person and the rest said some people are effected.

I also did qualitative research, i interviewed my dad and asked my dad few questions about video game violence and what he thinks about it.

On this video i ask my dad few questions, the video ended little bit early but that was the last question anyway. His conclusion was that video games don't cause aggression, the players only act bit differently because of the excitement of the game as the technology now has improved the games graphics and whole gaming experience. Also that the news says its only says it is linked to try and get less people to play video games, as they are worried about them when they don't need to be.

Audience research:

Audience classification-

Age:

The age linked towards this topic can vary as more younger people are playing video games, for example 10 years ago it might have started around age 12/13. However recent years people of younger years have games consoles around of age 7 which the researchers say the games can affect their behaviour at home and school, nevertheless other researchers say that computer games help children to learn.

Here is an article about age of kids and video games
In this article it says that 91% of kids aged 2-17 play games, and the biggest growth was with mobile devices. In 2009 8% of kids in this range was doing mobile gaming but now that number is 38% this conveys that more kids are playing games, some are before they can speak properly.

Gender:

There isn't a specific gender related to this issue as both genders could be affected. However i think the main gender that may get affected is males as there is more male gamers (all together not in one part of world) compared to females, especially hardcore gamers.

This is a snippet of an article that i found
In this article it is about gaming in the UK and in this part of the article it says that more women play games more than men. 52% of the gaming audience is women, this is up 49% from 3 years ago.

geo-demographic:

I think the people who are effected by this topic is people who are in middle class, which are social class or working class. The main people that are in the news or reports about this topic is young adults, around age 13 to mid 20's, so these people are either still in education or are in a part time job.

Socio-economic:

The type of life style they may have would be people who get average amount of income or live in or near a rough city/town. These people wouldn't be the 'posh' type who have loads of money even though they may have a games console and violent games, they may not be as effected.

Occupation:

As said in the 'geo-demographic' part, the people who are aimed at in this topic may be still in  education or a part time job or an a apprenticeship. They might be getting average or just under the average income.

Media/product preferences:

The type of media preferences the audience may be using is various social media apps/websites, for example: Facebook, twitter, whatsapp, tumbler, snapchat etc. The type of product preferences the audience would buy is things like: games consoles, games, controllers, music/cd's related to the type of games they like, and other game related products or cool gadgets.

Marker research:

This show will be a documentary and it will have different episodes for different parts of the UK. maybe if the series gets good ratings or vies then could do another series about places in different countrys so can get more evidence to see if gaming can cause violence or not. This documentary will be shown on channel 4 and will be shown maybe at 8 pm as cant be shown in morning as isn't really a show for children, it will be on for an hour with advert breaks in between. The market place i would like this to be set in is cities/towns that are/have a rough area, so for example could record bits of the show in places of Manchester and Manchester's rough area is Moss side and this could be the main place in Manchester but also do places around Moss side or other parts of Manchester.

This is an example of channel 4's popular documentaries.
When looking at channel 4's popular documentaries, they are usually strange or weird and wonderful type ones. I think this could link to my idea/documentary because it has teenagers in this documentary and people say that teenagers and young adults are most effected by gaming addiction and can become aggressive. Also i think this is one of the most popular documentaries on channel 4 because they aren't afraid to present shows that have strong content or shows that some people may find offensive or too vulgar.

I will advertise my documentary on channel 4s adverts, also other tv channels that show these type shows like BBC three.

Product research:

Breakdown of the show:
  • show starts at 8 pm.
  • from 0-13 mins shows titles, 1 min introduction about the show, and 1st area where the first person being interviewed lives and interviewing them.
  • after 13 mins of show its 3 minute add break.
  • at 8:16 pm till 8:29 pm its shows more interview of the 1st person and their family then shows what games they play and some footage of them playing their favourite game to see how they react.
  • at 8:29 pm shows 3 minute break.
  • at 8:32 pm till 8:46 pm shows 2nd person around same are as 1st person. shows the interview with this person and some interview with their family/friends.
  • at 8:46 pm it is a 3 minute add break.
  • at 8:49 pm shows what games the 2nd person plays and see some of their reactions to playing their fave game to see how they react.
  • at 8:59 it will cut to end credits and finish for 9 pm
Personnel i will need for my show:
  • camera operators
  • audio techs (mics)
  • the presenter
  • director
  • people to interview
Costings for making the TV show:
  • It costs around $1200- $3000 or more to hire the smallest professional film crew per day.
  • Editing and post-production, like filming, is usually costed by the day, and can cost from $500 to $1500 per day
  • If you still want to use professionals, you may be able to get away with a micro crew with minimal equipment, costing only perhaps $1500 a day, and a small number of post-production editing hours.
The cameras that would be used in my documentaries is:

This is the Canon XF100
This camera is in the top 5 of the top 5 best documentary cameras, its rating is 4.4 out of 5. This camera will be good for recording in high quality during interviews and when recording the reactions of the people playing the video games.

This microphone would be very useful:
this is called a Lapel microphone

These are tiny little microphones, also referred to as lavalier microphones, that clip to someone’s shirt or tie and are usually used in a sit-down interview situation. These are great for capturing consistent audio levels as the microphone does not move around like a handheld mic. (Helpful Hint: always tuck away wires and cables for a more professional look). These would be good for situations where certain people don't want to talk with big microphone or to feel more comfortable.

There will also be other equipment like small cameras so can record the interviewer reactions to playing the games, so they don't feel as if they are being filmed as much so can get better evidence. Also a hand held recorder in case people don't want to be filmed while being interviewed, for reasons like not wanting to show their identity.

Summary:

With all this research, it may lead people to think that gaming does cause aggression or maybe people in between and people who think it doesn't.

In my secondary research i found that the majority of the articles/videos about gaming were negative, saying that it causes aggression and violence or isn't good for your health. There are few articles/videos that suggest gaming doesn't cause these things but is actually good, as it is good to challenge your brain. The article i picked thats positive says that it is not the game causing the children/young adults behaviour to change, it is the time spent playing them that causes changes. From this research i agree with the positive article that games don't cause aggression or violence because i myself play video games but me and my family don't see any changes, i don't play for very long (about an hour or just over). However i think some people are effected differently which some people playing video games for a long period of time may have changes in their behaviour.

In my secondary research i did made a questionnaire and gave it to 10 people, the results i got were helpful as all of them owned a violent video game and only 2 out of the 10 said they have/do feel more aggressive, the others might have felt same but may not have wanted to confess or they don't think they have but others say they do. I also interviewed my dad and asked him similar questions but to see what he thinks about video gaming. With these results i agree that it depends on the person whether or not it will effect them and depending on the time spent playing the games. Also may depend on age, if your at a mature age you might not be as affected because if u have a job you would be focusing on that and maybe playing the games in spare time which if have full time job then wouldn't get much free time and if do then most may spend it relaxing not playing games.
